 Files, we haz them!

October 12th, 2008 ··· andarius

Well I got a bit motivated and finally wrote the code to run the files section of the site. As usual it is nothing massive or complex and uses a simple concept. Not much up there now but I hope to get more on there soon.

As usual enjoy! ;)

My pirate name is:
Dirty James Kidd

You’re the pirate everyone else wants to throw in the ocean — not to get rid of you, you understand; just to get rid of the smell. Even though you’re not always the traditional swaggering gallant, your steadiness and planning make you a fine, reliable pirate. Arr!

 New Server
···

September 4th, 2008 ··· andarius

I have been under the pile of to-dos lately but I am working on getting things moving again. Primary task as of late was the addition of a new server. I got an IBM xSeries 330 from ebay for 47$ after shipping. This machine replaced photon which was an aging and bad cap latent AMD Athlon 2200 system.

The new IBM (well new to me) is a dual pIII system @ 1.4 GHz with 1.5 gigs of ram. It was sold as only having a single 18.2 GB SCSI HD but arrived with a pair of them which are now using Linux software raid1. It is now up and running well after replacing the CMOS battery. Current uptime is 33 days, 11 hours and 52 minutes without a hitch.

More details to include some Slackware installation notes and pics to follow soon.

 Spoon please!
···

April 10th, 2008 ··· andarius

I am reminded daily how lazy and spoon fed the average person is these days. I shall give you a prime example which I actually witnessed first hand myself.

While serving as the IMO/ISAO of a company I was tasked to update and add some software to a good number of machines. I had just finished doing this to the machine of one of our senior personnel. I asked this person to log in and check things out to make sure all was OK. As standard policy the log-in screen is the standard Press ctl+alt+del deal. I sat in stunned awe as this person who had been using this very computer for several months at a minimum proceeded to click on that window for nearly a whole minute. After this time I could contain myself no longer an said “I think you actually have to use the keys”. The user did so and was presented with the actual log in screen as expected.

My point here is not management is some what lacking these days in most cases. This is a point most of us already know. My point is the average person is so spoon fed that they will not even bother to read a simple message that is presented directly in front of them. Even if that message obviously pertains to the task at hand. Forget about reading a document or manual to learn how to do something.
