Well, the replacement parts for the stolen server are in and up and running. photon ][ (or 2) is born.

The replacement parts are combined to make up the first server I have built for myself from all new parts. Well, almost all new. The hard drive ousing the OS is a use component. The list of gear breaks down as follows:

One difference in the actual parts and what is linked above is the rack mount chassis. The one I got came with a 600 watt PSU comapred to the 550 watt unit in the link.

The gear is up and running. If you are into that kind of data stand by a few more days for this weekend and I will get some load data posted. The load was done in a hurry so I could get out the door for some work related travel.

I will go ahead and let you know the obvious, of course it is much faster and powerful than the original IBM x330 1u server. Now to work out a more permanent solution for firewall duties.

I passed along that I had gotten a new 1u rack mount server to replace what I was using for my home server. It is an IBM xSeries 330 model which is a bit older but I got it very cheap so it suites me fine. The order of the day when I got it was to install Slackware 12.1 on it and set up services. That was not as easy as I thought it would be.

 Upgrade Logic

February 11th, 2008 ··· andarius

I was faced with a hard decision this last Saturday. The hard drive I used on eegor failed Friday night. So of course not having a suitable replacement on hand I had to decide on an upgrade path for the hardware I had.

When I am done I hope to have the final replacement for eegor running much closer to modern hardware with decent specs. It will be a dual machine with all SATA drives. Raid1 is in it’s future with plans to hit about 2-8 TB of capacity. Sucky thing is I did not have the cash to get anything needed to move me in that direction. What to do, what to do.

Well the hardware is assembled and running. I will let it run and burn in for the next week before putting it into full service between my network and the rest of the internet. All I can say right now is “bit-barrier lives!!”

 Hardware Goodness

December 31st, 2007 ··· andarius

For Christmas I was given some of the things I wanted most. I got a pair of Gigabit NICs from Intel, a CF-to-IDE adapter and cash. The cash partialy went to the purchase of an Athena Power rackmount chassis with power supply and a 1u cooler for the socket 478 board.

What does all this mean? Means bit-barrier will be online a day or so after the last part arrives. The case is scheduled for delivery Friday. I hope the cooler will arrive shortly there after but do not know as of yet. Should all parts be in before Sunday the assembly will be delayed until late Sunday night or Monday. As my daughter is here she has presedence :P

Ring in the New Year with a blast!!
