 bit-barrier up
···

January 13th, 2008 ··· andarius

bit-barrier is online and working fine. It took me a bit to get all of the network segments set up. Specially when I failed to remember that I had staticaly assigned eegors network data. I had to go back through all of it by hand and change things to the new net block.

All is well now and I feel a bit better. I am also pretty happy with how the hardware and software is running. Things are a tad snappier than they were before. The whole deal is more responsive. Then again I would expect as much when moving from an embedded router/AP solution to a dedicated machine running at 2 GHz with half a gig of RAM. Slight hardware difference there ;)

Well the hardware is assembled and running. I will let it run and burn in for the next week before putting it into full service between my network and the rest of the internet. All I can say right now is “bit-barrier lives!!”

 Activating bit-barrier (soon)
···

December 7th, 2007 ··· andarius

I have been working on acquiring the hardware to build a new firewall for my home network. Recently I was given an AMD board along with an Athlon 2000+ CPU and video card. Go figure almost right after I find a computer sitting next to the trash drop point in my apartment complex. This one turns out to be an Intel based system. Inside is a working mini-ATX motherboard, 2 GHz socket 478 Celeron and power supply. I figure it is dead but pop in some memory and it boots right up. The CD burner in it even works.

Right now I am hoping for a pair of Intel Gigabit NICs and a CF adapter for Christmas. I get those and build myself a case and off we go. With the new Endian Firewall looking to be even better than the last version it is a shoe in for the load. As soon as I complete the hardware list I will do the build and load and perhaps post a few pics.

Of course the title of this post refers to the name. The last firewall was gate-keeper. The new one will be bit-barrier.

 Slackware + httpd + SSL
···

October 1st, 2007 ··· andarius

Slackware httpd with SSL is rather easy to set up. It is not however an automatic process. Note that this will not give you official certs. These are not good for things like banking and such. The steps below will however give you a set of unique self-signed certs that will help keep things a bit more solid.

 Endian Firewall Community

Just thought I would pass on a bit of data. There are several firewall distributions out there in the net. Many of them are really good. Some are better than others. One that you I have not seen much of is actually my current favorite. Endian Firewall. This is a feature rich firewall distribution that does a lot and offers control over more than most of the others you can get for free.

Main things I like that it has from the start is outbound firewall control, application-level proxies for various protocols (HTTP, FTP, POP3, SMTP) with antivirus support, virus and spam filtering for email traffic (POP and SMTP), content filtering of Web traffic. The feature list is rather nice.

If you are looking into a firewall solution check it out.
